Offered here is a World War II German Mauser Oberndorf K98k bolt-action rifle chambered in 7.92×57mm (8mm Mauser). The receiver is marked byf 43, identifying production by Mauser Oberndorf in 1943, one of the most desirable wartime manufacturers among K98k collectors.

This rifle is a documented Russian Capture (RC) example; however, unlike the vast majority of RC rifles encountered today, it retains an exceptionally high percentage of its original factory-matching components, making it a particularly desirable example for collectors.

Matching Components

The following original components remain matching to the receiver serial number 247**:

  • Receiver
  • Stock (matching serial retained inside the barrel channel)
  • Upper handguard
  • Rear sight assembly
  • Front and rear barrel bands
  • Sling band

As typical for German wartime production, many smaller parts are marked only with the last two or four digits (45 / 4745), all of which correctly correspond to the receiver serial number.

Non-Matching Components

Only two numbered components differ from the original rifle:

  • Complete bolt assembly – serial 4600
  • Magazine floorplate – serial 21957

Unlike most Russian Capture K98k rifles, this example appears to have had only a complete matching bolt assembly (4600) and the magazine floorplate replaced during Soviet refurbishment. The bolt itself remains internally matching throughout, including the bolt body, safety, firing pin, cocking piece, bolt shroud, and associated components, confirming that it is a complete matching bolt assembly rather than a collection of mixed replacement parts.

The remainder of the rifle retains its original matching numbered major components, making this an exceptionally well-preserved Russian Capture example.

Serial Number Integrity

Inspection found no evidence of force-matched, re-stamped, or renumbered serial numbers anywhere on the rifle.

All visible serial numbers appear to be original factory-applied markings or original Soviet replacement components. No post-war force-matching or renumbering was observed.

Russian Capture Markings

The Russian Capture electro-penciled inventory number and RC "X" mark are limited to a single location on the receiver. Both markings are exceptionally light and have caused minimal disturbance to the original metal surface, unlike the more heavily marked examples commonly encountered on Russian Capture K98k rifles.

Original German Inspection Marks

Numerous original German Waffenamt (Eagle acceptance) stamps remain visible throughout the rifle, confirming its wartime German military manufacture and preserving much of its original inspection history.

Stock

The stock has been professionally refinished at some point during its service life while retaining its original matching serial number internally.

The wood remains structurally sound with no visible structural cracks, presenting an attractive appearance while preserving its original wartime fit.

Bore & Mechanical Condition

The rifle functions properly.

The bore exhibits honest service wear consistent with its age and military use. The rifling remains clearly visible, with overall bore condition better than that found on the majority of Russian Capture K98k rifles currently encountered on the surplus market.

The metal finish remains in very good overall condition with honest military handling and storage wear consistent with wartime service.

Collector's Assessment

Russian Capture K98k rifles retaining:

  • Original matching receiver
  • Original matching stock
  • Original matching handguard
  • Matching rear sight
  • Matching barrel bands and sling band
  • Only one complete replacement matching bolt assembly and one replacement magazine floorplate
  • No force-matched or re-stamped serial numbers
  • Russian Capture electro-pencil markings limited to a single, very lightly marked location on the receiver
  • Numerous original Waffenamt acceptance stamps
  • Bore condition better than the majority of Russian Capture K98k rifles

are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

This rifle offers collectors an outstanding opportunity to acquire a Mauser Oberndorf byf 43 that combines the affordability of a Russian Capture rifle with an unusually high degree of original factory integrity, making it an excellent choice for both collectors and shooters.
