Details:
An exceptional early-war Mauser Oberndorf “code 42” K98k, produced in 1940—the pinnacle of Mauser craftsmanship before wartime simplifications began. The receiver is crisply marked “42” over “1940,” and the rifle retains three sharp WaA655 Waffenamt inspection stamps, confirming Oberndorf acceptance.
The barrel is marked “40 DO 436,” indicating original manufacture by Gustloff Werke, Weimar, one of Mauser’s main wartime barrel suppliers. Every numbered component—receiver, bolt body, bolt shroud, safety, extractor, floor plate, trigger guard, rear sight base, front sight base, upper handguard, and all barrel bands (front and rear),Band Retaining Spring and buttplate—bears the matching serial number 975*, a highly desirable feature among collectors.
The cleaning rod bears the single assembly mark “3”, which is correct for early Oberndorf production and not a serial number. Early-war Mauser rifles often used such assembly marks rather than numbering cleaning rods.
Metal finish retains the original early-war deep salt-blue coloration, showing light service wear consistent with age. The laminated stock remains solid with an attractive reddish tone, featuring the flat steel buttplate typical of 1940 production. Mechanical function is excellent, with tight lock-up and a smooth bolt action.
The rifle comes complete with its original wartime black leather sling, showing a faint German eagle inspection mark—period-correct and extremely hard to find with matching rifles.
This rifle represents a fully original, factory-matched example of the 1940 Oberndorf K98k, combining outstanding condition, authenticity, and historical significance. It is a true collector-grade piece, worthy of any advanced Mauser or WWII military collection.
