Item Description

This is a WWII-era Japanese Type 98 Shin-Gunto, retaining its characteristic Japanese military sword mounts. The tang bears a “Kawachi no Kami Kunisuke” (河内守国助) signature, and the sword is accompanied by a Japanese Firearms and Swords Registration Certificate (銃砲刀剣類登録証).

The blade measures approximately 64.6 cm, with a width at the base (Motohaba) of approximately 31 mm and a thickness at the base (Motokasane) of approximately 7.5 mm. The blade retains a complete overall profile, with a clearly visible and active Hamon. Age-related handling, storage, and polishing marks are present, along with some localized light oxidation or pitting. Please refer to all actual-item photographs for exact condition.

Of particular interest is the “Kawachi no Kami Kunisuke” (河内守国助) signature on the tang. Kawachi no Kami Kunisuke is not simply the name of an individual swordsmith, but a well-known swordsmith lineage dating back to the early Edo period, closely associated with the development of the Osaka Shinto tradition. The first-generation Kunisuke was an important early Osaka Shinto smith, and the name continued through subsequent generations. The second generation, commonly known as Naka-Kawachi Kunisuke, became particularly renowned for elaborate Choji-style Hamon, including the distinctive Kobushigata-Choji (“fist-shaped Choji”) pattern.

The nakago (tang) bears the signature “Kawachi no Kami Kunisuke” and retains natural oxidation and age patina, with mekugi-ana visible. The signature is described as it appears on the tang; no definitive attribution to a specific generation of the Kunisuke lineage is being made in this listing.

The blade is currently mounted in Japanese Army Type 98 Shin-Gunto military fittings, including the military-style tsuka, tsuba, associated hardware, and a green metal military scabbard with suspension fitting. The mounts display age-related wear and storage marks consistent with their vintage nature.

The sword is also accompanied by its Japanese 銃砲刀剣類登録証 (Firearms and Swords Registration Certificate). Please refer to the actual-item photographs for the registration details and condition of the document.
