Offered here is an exceptionally well-preserved FN Herstal-manufactured Israeli Mauser 98, later arsenal-converted by the Israeli military to 7.62×51mm NATO.
Unlike the more commonly encountered German WWII K98k rifles later acquired and converted by Israel, this rifle was manufactured by Fabrique Nationale (FN) Herstal in Belgium specifically for the Israeli contract. The left side of the receiver retains the clear “FAB. NAT. D'ARMES de GUERRE / HERSTAL BELGIQUE” factory marking, while the receiver ring displays the prominent Israeli military crest and “7.62” marking, giving the rifle an unmistakable postwar Israeli military identity.
The rifle was subsequently arsenal-converted during Israel’s transition to 7.62×51 NATO. The barrel retains a “7.62” marking along with additional Israeli military inspection and arsenal markings. Further Israeli markings are present on other components, including a distinctive Star of David inspection/acceptance mark, providing additional evidence of its Israeli military service and arsenal history.
Of particular interest, the receiver and bolt are both numbered 59**** and are matching. A detailed inspection shows that these are the only two components carrying the rifle’s full serial number; the other numbers and letter markings found throughout the rifle are inspection, assembly, or arsenal markings rather than serial numbers. The rifle can therefore be accurately described as having a matching receiver and bolt.
Another outstanding feature is the exceptionally clean stock. The wood remains remarkably fresh and attractive, with an even appearance and only minor handling and service marks. No obvious major cracks or significant structural damage are observed. For an Israeli military Mauser that went through both service use and the 7.62 NATO standardization program, the condition of the stock is particularly impressive.
The bore is also in excellent condition, remaining clean with strong, deep, and well-defined rifling. The lands and grooves remain clearly defined, with no obvious major corrosion or significant pitting observed.
The metal components remain in very good overall condition, retaining normal military handling and service wear while preserving the rifle’s numerous Israeli military and inspection markings.
The rifle is also accompanied by what appears to be an original period Israeli military leather sling. The leather itself retains an Israeli military marking together with “2804-0252,” while the metal hardware carries a corresponding Israeli marking. Based on its construction, markings, and naturally aged wear to both the leather and hardware, the sling appears consistent with an original period Israeli military example.
With its FN Herstal Belgian manufacture, Israeli military crest, 7.62×51 NATO arsenal conversion, numerous Israeli military markings, matching receiver and bolt, exceptionally clean stock, excellent bore, and period Israeli military leather sling, this is a particularly attractive and well-preserved example of the FN-made Israeli Mauser 98.
