Offered here is an ornate British Royal Horse Artillery (RHA) Officer's Full Dress Uniform, believed to date from the early 20th century, circa 1920s or earlier.
The set consists of an elaborately decorated black officer's full dress jacket and a pair of black military trousers featuring distinctive red side stripes.
Full Dress Jacket
The jacket features multiple rows of elaborate gold braid frogging across the chest, complemented by gilt buttons, creating the distinctive and ornate appearance of a traditional British officer's full dress uniform.
The red standing collar is decorated with gold-wire embroidered Royal Artillery insignia.
The shoulders feature substantial gold braided shoulder boards with embroidered rank pips.
Additional intricate gold braid decoration is present on the cuffs and back of the jacket, demonstrating the detailed craftsmanship and distinctive styling of historical British military dress.
The jacket retains King's Crown Royal Artillery pattern buttons.
Original Tailor's Label & Officer's Name
The interior of the jacket retains its original maker's label:
J. DANIELS & CO.
1 Artillery Place, Woolwich
& 34 Bury St., St. James's, S.W.
The label also bears handwritten information reading:
D 939 – Lt. Eddis, Esq. – RHA
Lt. is the abbreviation for Lieutenant, while RHA stands for Royal Horse Artillery.
This handwritten name provides an interesting opportunity for further historical research into the original officer's identity and the history of the uniform.
Trousers
Included is a pair of black military trousers featuring broad red stripes running along the outer sides of the legs.
The trousers retain period-style buttons and traditional tailoring details, with the recorded number 98735PT.
Condition
Considering its age, the uniform remains in very good overall condition.
Due to its considerable age, the interior of the jacket shows some areas of loose or separated stitching, along with localized damage. However, the exterior of the jacket remains in very good condition, retaining its elaborate gold braid decorations and impressive overall appearance.
The trousers have a few small holes but are otherwise in very good overall condition.
Please carefully examine all photographs for the exact condition and details.
Historical Background & Collectibility
The Royal Horse Artillery (RHA) was established in 1793 as part of the British Royal Artillery, originally providing mobile artillery support for cavalry formations.
Traditional Royal Horse Artillery officers' full dress uniforms are particularly recognizable for their elaborate gold braid frogging, red standing collars, decorative shoulder boards, and intricate cuff designs.
This example retains its original maker's label, handwritten officer's name, Royal Artillery insignia, and accompanying trousers, making it an interesting piece for collectors of British military uniforms, historical military memorabilia, and ceremonial dress.
