German Wartime Cupped Buttplate Upgrade
The rifle is fitted with a later-style cupped buttplate, rather than the early flat buttplate normally associated with a 1937-production K98k.
Importantly, this is not simply an unnumbered replacement. The buttplate carries the corresponding “94” serial number along with German-period military inspection/acceptance markings.
The combination of its later configuration, matching serial number, and German-period markings is consistent with the historical practice of German wartime arsenal repair and upgrading of earlier K98k rifles, with replacement components renumbered to the rifle. The cupped buttplate was therefore likely installed during a German wartime arsenal repair or upgrade rather than being the rifle's original 1937-production buttplate.
1955 Czechoslovak Military Acceptance Mark
The rifle bears one clear “G1 / Crossed Swords / 55” marking. This is the only clearly identified Czechoslovak marking currently observed on the rifle.
The crossed swords are a Czechoslovak military acceptance mark, with “55” indicating 1955, showing that this German K98k entered the postwar Czechoslovak military/arsenal system and was accepted or inspected in 1955.
The exact meaning of the accompanying “G1” marking has not been confirmed.
Metal Condition
The metalwork is in very good overall condition. Some localized pitting is present around the receiver and floorplate, along with normal age and service wear. The remaining metal surfaces are generally very well preserved.
The exterior of the barrel is particularly clean and bright, including the normally hidden areas beneath the stock, with no significant corrosion observed.
Bore
The bore is bright with strong, clearly visible rifling. It is not described as perfect or mirror bright, but remains in very good overall condition.
Stock
The wood stock remains in very good overall condition, retaining attractive age and normal military service wear. The stock is matching and retains period inspection markings.
A small, faint age-related crack is present along the underside of the buttstock. It shows no significant separation or displacement and currently appears stable.
