As one of Japan's principal wartime arsenals, Nagoya produced a significant number of Type 99 rifles and remains one of the most recognized manufacturers among collectors of Imperial Japanese military firearms.
This rifle is an all-matching example, retaining matching serial numbers on all major numbered components, including the receiver, bolt body, extractor, firing pin, safety knob, and front barrel band/bayonet lug assembly. The high degree of originality found on this rifle is becoming increasingly uncommon among surviving Type 99 Arisakas.
A particularly desirable feature is the retention of its original dust cover, an accessory that was commonly removed and discarded during military service and is seldom encountered today. The dust cover's serial number has become heavily worn through decades of normal operation and cycling and is no longer fully legible. However, upon close inspection, the first digit "6" can still be faintly identified, consistent with the rifle's other matching components numbered 640, while the overall wear pattern strongly supports it as the rifle's original matching dust cover.
The rifle is not fitted with its original cleaning rod and does not retain the anti-aircraft (AA) sight wings, both of which are commonly absent on surviving Type 99 rifles.
The receiver's Imperial Chrysanthemum (Mum) has been arsenal-ground, with only faint traces of the original crest remaining visible, a common characteristic of Japanese rifles surrendered following the end of the Second World War.
The wood stock remains structurally sound, retaining its original military configuration with no obvious evidence of later sanding, refinishing, or restoration. The metal components remain in their original military finish, showing honest service wear consistent with age but no apparent evidence of later polishing or rebluing.
The bore is bright with strong, well-defined rifling. While it exhibits normal service wear expected of a military rifle, the rifling remains clearly defined, and the bore is in good overall condition.
Overall, this is an honest and highly original all-matching Type 99 Arisaka, distinguished by its surviving original dust cover, original finish, excellent originality, and solid mechanical condition. Despite the arsenal-ground Mum, it represents an increasingly difficult configuration to find and would make an outstanding addition to any collection of Imperial Japanese military firearms.
