Offered here is a Winchester Model 94 Little Big Horn Centennial Commemorative lever-action rifle chambered in the historic .44-40 Winchester (.44 W.C.F.), one of the most iconic cartridges of the American frontier.
The Little Big Horn Centennial was introduced as part of Winchester's celebrated commemorative Model 94 series honoring significant events in American history. Produced in an estimated quantity of approximately 11,000 rifles, it remains one of the best-known Western-themed commemorative models offered by Winchester. Distinctive features include a gold-coloured engraved receiver depicting scenes and motifs associated with the Battle of the Little Bighorn, matching gold-coloured furniture, and a walnut buttstock fitted with the official Little Big Horn Centennial medallion and decorative crossed-cavalry carving.
What makes this rifle particularly desirable is its chambering in .44-40 Winchester (.44 W.C.F.) rather than the far more commonly encountered .30-30 Winchester. Introduced by Winchester in 1873 for the Model 1873, the .44-40 became one of the defining cartridges of the Old West and was widely carried by ranchers, lawmen, hunters, settlers, and frontiersmen throughout the late nineteenth century. Its ability to be shared between Winchester lever-action rifles and Colt Single Action Army revolvers made it one of the most practical and successful sporting cartridges of its era. Today, many collectors consider the .44-40 to be the chambering most closely associated with the classic American West, making examples such as this especially appealing within Winchester's commemorative lineup.
This rifle retains the classic Model 94 configuration with a 20-inch barrel, full-length tubular magazine, saddle ring, adjustable rear sight, and brass-coloured commemorative trim. The wood remains in very attractive condition with only light handling marks from careful ownership. The engraved receiver remains crisp, while the bore appears bright with strong rifling and the action cycles smoothly during inspection.
A highly collectible Winchester commemorative combining one of the company's most recognizable Western-themed editions with one of the most historically significant lever-action cartridges ever produced.
