The Walther K43 (G43) is one of the most iconic German semi-automatic service rifles of the Second World War. Originally introduced as the Gewehr 43 (G43), the rifle was later redesignated Karabiner 43 (K43) during wartime production. Both designations refer to the same rifle, with the K43 designation becoming increasingly common on later-production examples.
Chambered in the historic 8×57mm IS (8mm Mauser) cartridge, the K43 served as Germany's primary semi-automatic service rifle during the latter stages of World War II.
This particular rifle is a Walther-manufactured example and remains in highly desirable overall collector condition.
The visible serialized components inspected, including the receiver and gas system assembly, are all marked 34** and remain matching. Matching gas system components are particularly desirable on K43 rifles, as these parts were frequently replaced during military service and post-war refurbishment.
The receiver bears the distinctive East German Volkspolizei (VOPO) sunburst acceptance mark, documenting its post-war East German service history. This marking represents an authentic period refurbishment and acceptance, adding another layer of historical significance to the rifle while preserving its military provenance.
During routine disassembly and cleaning, the bolt assembly was inspected internally. Two of the original serialized bolt components remain matching to the rifle. One additional bolt component is period force-matched with an applied serial number, indicating a military service or arsenal renumbering rather than an original factory match. The bolt assembly is complete, mechanically sound, and functions correctly.
The rifle is accompanied by an original K43 magazine, although the magazine itself is not serial numbered.
One notable missing component is the dust cover. Fortunately, both original and reproduction K43 dust covers remain readily available on the collector market. Since dust covers were never serial numbered, their absence does not affect the rifle's visible matching-number configuration.
The bore is one of this rifle's greatest highlights. It remains bright with exceptionally sharp and well-defined rifling, presenting remarkably well for a wartime German military firearm.
The stock remains solid and structurally sound, showing only honest military service wear consistent with its age. The walnut has developed an attractive period patina, while the metal finish retains an appealing overall appearance, resulting in an excellent presentation as a collector-grade WWII firearm.
Collector's Note
While the K43 (G43) remains a fully functional military rifle, its historical significance and collector value far outweigh its role as a regular shooting firearm.
This rifle has been test fired by our shop using carefully developed reduced-pressure handloaded ammunition and functioned reliably during testing with normal feeding, extraction, and cycling.
Prospective owners should be aware that the K43/G43 platform is well known among collectors for its inherently over-gassed operating system. Unlike many later self-loading rifle designs, the K43 utilizes a fixed gas system with little ability to accommodate the pressure variations found in modern commercial ammunition.
During firing, high-pressure propellant gases are diverted through the gas port to drive the gas piston and bolt carrier assembly, cycling the action. Due to the design characteristics of the K43 gas system, the bolt carrier velocity is relatively high. Modern full-power commercial 8×57mm IS ammunition often exhibits pressure characteristics that differ from the original German wartime 7.92×57mm s.S. Patrone cartridge for which the rifle was designed. These differences can subject the operating system to increased mechanical stress and further increase the speed of the bolt carrier assembly.
The use of modern full-power commercial ammunition may increase wear on the gas system, bolt carrier, locking components, and receiver, while also increasing the likelihood of parts breakage. It is important to note that this is not a condition unique to this particular rifle, but rather a well-documented characteristic shared by virtually all original K43/G43 rifles due to the inherent design of the platform.
For the long-term preservation of this historic firearm, we strongly recommend the use of reduced-pressure handloads or collector-friendly ammunition specifically intended for historic military rifles. Full-power modern commercial hunting ammunition is not recommended.
