Offered here is a rare Siamese / Thai Type 66 military rifle built on the Arisaka system. These rifles formed part of Thailand’s early-20th-century military modernization and were produced within the Japanese arms manufacturing system.

Historical sources indicate that Siamese military rifles were associated with production within the Japanese military industry, including the Tokyo Artillery Arsenal (Koishikawa Arsenal).
The Type 66 series is generally believed to have been produced or supplied for Siamese military contracts during the 1920s–1930s period.

The designation Type 66 refers to the Buddhist Era year 2466 (1923). Historical estimates suggest that approximately several tens of thousands of rifles (around 50,000 units) were produced or ordered. Compared with contemporary European or Japanese service rifles that were manufactured in far larger numbers, surviving Siamese rifles are significantly less common on the collector market and are therefore considered highly rare among military firearms collectors.

Specifications

Model: Siamese / Thai Type 66

Action: Arisaka-system bolt action

Caliber: 8×52R Siamese

Magazine: Internal box magazine

Cleaning rod: Present

Dust cover: Intact

Mechanical condition: Action cycles smoothly and functions properly

Serial Numbers

The receiver bears the Thai serial number:

๓๕๓๑ (3531)

The bolt root is marked with the last three digits:

๕๓๑ (531)

This corresponds to the final digits of the receiver serial number, which is a common numbering practice for military rifles.

Internal bolt components also show consistent numbering within the same marking system.
Based on the visible Thai serial markings, the receiver and bolt correspond, and the bolt assembly shows consistent internal numbering, indicating the rifle retains its original matching bolt assembly.

Please refer to the photos for detailed markings.

Bore Condition

The bore appears relatively clean with visible rifling. Due to the scarcity of Siamese rifles of this type, direct comparison with other examples is difficult; therefore the exact degree of bore wear cannot be definitively assessed.

Stock Condition

The stock is structurally solid with no cracks, showing only normal service wear.

Due to the hot and humid climate of Southeast Asia, Siamese military rifles were commonly treated for insect resistance, moisture protection, and preservation. This example retains the characteristic red base treatment with a black protective lacquer finish, typical of Southeast Asian military stock preservation methods.

Historical Background

Type 66 rifles served with the Royal Siamese (later Thai) military and remained in service into the World War II era.

Because of their limited production and relatively small number surviving today, Siamese Arisaka-system rifles have become increasingly desirable among military surplus collectors.

Overall

Note

While the rifle appears to be in good overall condition and all mechanical functions operate properly, the rifle has not been test fired due to the unavailability of 8×52R Siamese ammunition.
