This is a Mosin-Nagant Model 1891 “Cossack” variant, later converted into the M91/38 carbine configuration, chambered in 7.62×54R.
The rifle is built on an original 1912-dated Imperial Russian barrel and receiver, with clear factory markings from the Tsarist period. This example represents a documented Czech conversion of a long M1891 rifle into carbine form (commonly referred to as M91/38). These conversions are distinct from Soviet-produced carbines such as the M38 or M44, as they originate from earlier Imperial rifles rather than wartime Soviet production.
The rifle remains in very good overall condition:
-
Bore shows strong rifling
-
Stock is solid with handling marks consistent with age
-
Metal finish shows even wear and patina
Rifles of this type represent a combination of three distinct historical layers:
-
Imperial Russian production (pre-1917)
-
Cossack-pattern military configuration
-
Post-service Czech arsenal conversion into a carbine (91/38)
This makes them significantly less common than standard Mosin-Nagant rifles encountered on today’s market.
A highly desirable and uncommon variant for collectors seeking something beyond standard Soviet carbines.
