This is a Lee-Enfield No.5 Mk I “Jungle Carbine”, chambered in .303 British, and manufactured in 1946 by ROF (Royal Ordnance Factory). It represents early post-war production of this iconic British light infantry rifle. The No.5 Mk I is renowned for its shortened barrel, reduced weight, and excellent handling characteristics, making it one of the most recognizable and collectible Lee-Enfield variants.
The rifle retains a strong original military appearance. The wood furniture shows attractive grain with honest service and storage wear consistent with its age, presenting very well overall. Metal components are in good condition, markings remain visible, and the bolt cycles smoothly. The rear sight graduations are clear, and the front sight assembly is intact.
The bore is in very good condition, with strong, well-defined rifling visible throughout. It shows normal use but remains clean and sharp, making this rifle suitable for both shooting and collecting.
Please note that the serial numbers are non-matching, which is not uncommon for Lee-Enfield rifles that have seen military service and post-war refurbishment. This does not affect the rifle’s function or overall integrity.
Additionally, the rubber buttpad shows age-related deterioration due to the passage of time, a common characteristic on original No.5 Mk I rifles. This is cosmetic in nature and does not affect the structural integrity or operation of the firearm.
Overall, this is a solid example of a 1946 ROF No.5 Mk I, offering a desirable combination of historical significance, collector appeal, and practical usability.
