Gewehr 88/05 Rifle – Spandau 1897
This Gewehr 88/05, manufactured in 1897 at the Spandau Arsenal, is a classic example of late 19th-century German military engineering. Originally introduced as the Gewehr 1888, this rifle was later upgraded to the 88/05 configuration, a key modernization that allowed it to use standard 7.92×57mm Mauser ammunition via stripper clips, replacing the earlier en-bloc system.
The 88/05 retains the distinctive barrel shroud (jacketed barrel) of the original design but features the open receiver cut and stripper clip guide associated with the upgrade. These changes aligned the rifle with Germany’s evolving military needs leading into the 20th century.
Chambered in 8mm Mauser (S-Patrone compatible), this bolt-action rifle remains mechanically sound and is in good overall condition. The bolt cycles smoothly, the bore is clean with visible rifling, and the imperial markings—including the Spandau maker’s mark and 1897 date stamp—are still clear and legible. Metal surfaces show honest age-related wear, with no signs of excessive corrosion or pitting.
This firearm is ideal for collectors, reenactors, or enthusiasts of German military history. It represents a transitional weapon used by German forces from the late 1890s through World War I, making it a significant piece in any historic arms collection.
Compatible with Modern 8mm Mauser Spitzer Ammunition
This Gewehr 88/05 rifle has been upgraded by the Turkish military. The clear "7,91" marking below the rear sight indicates that the chamber has been modified to accept modern 7.92x57mm Mauser Spitzer ammunition. Based on the bolt and other matching numbers, including a "74" Turkish arsenal marking, the rifle remained in service as late as 1974 and underwent official upgrades. It is now safe to fire with modern 8mm Mauser Spitzer rounds—offering both historical significance and functional value.
