Offered here is a Czech Brno VZ.24 Mauser bolt-action rifle chambered in 8×57mm Mauser, identified as a highly desirable Romanian Contract example by its TR-prefix serial number. Manufactured by Československá Zbrojovka Brno during the German occupation of Czechoslovakia, this rifle represents one of the later Romanian Contract VZ.24 variants produced around 1940, a unique transitional period in the history of Brno rifle production.

Following the German occupation of Brno in 1939, VZ.24 production continued under German administration. During this same period, Romania underwent a major political transformation following the abdication of King Carol II in September 1940 and the establishment of Marshal Ion Antonescu’s government, aligning the country with the Axis powers. Germany continued fulfilling Romania’s existing Brno rifle contracts, resulting in the distinctive late-production Romanian Contract rifles found in the TR, UR, XR, and YR serial ranges.

This rifle retains matching serial numbers on the receiver and stock (TR146). It features the desirable uncrested receiver ring, a characteristic widely associated with these late Romanian Contract rifles. Within the VZ.24 collecting community, this configuration is generally regarded as an original production feature of the late German-occupation Romanian contracts rather than the result of later arsenal removal of the Romanian royal crest, although surviving factory documentation remains limited.

Another defining feature is the receiver marking, "ZBROJOVKA BRNO, A.S.", without the pre-war "ČS." prefix. This reflects post-occupation production, when references to the former Czechoslovak state were removed from Brno factory markings.

Unlike later Gewehr 24(t) rifles manufactured for German military service—which progressively adopted K98k features such as cupped buttplates, laminate stocks, and other standardized German components—these Romanian Contract rifles largely retained the classic VZ.24 configuration. This example correctly retains its original walnut stock and original flat steel buttplate, features consistent with early German-occupation Romanian Contract production.

The bolt assembly has been arsenal force-matched to the rifle. The bolt body and internal components retain original Czech inspection markings, indicating the continued use of original Czech-manufactured components rather than modern replacement parts. Force-matched bolts are commonly encountered on long-serving Romanian military rifles and reflect their extensive wartime and post-war service history.

The rifle remains in its original military configuration with the correct sights, bayonet lug, cleaning rod, and sling hardware. The metal finish retains an attractive military appearance with honest service wear throughout. The walnut stock displays normal handling marks accumulated through decades of service, including a small arsenal-style repair to the upper handguard and a minor chip near the receiver. The wood remains solid and structurally sound.

The bore is in excellent condition, bright with strong, sharp rifling.
