Manufactured by Österreichische Waffenfabriks-Gesellschaft (OEWG), Steyr, Austria, this Prussian Model 1871 Jägerbüchse (Short Rifle) is chambered in the powerful 11.15×60R Mauser (.43 Mauser) cartridge. Originally adopted by the Prussian Army for Jäger (light infantry and rifle) units, the M1871 Jägerbüchse represents one of the earliest standardized metallic-cartridge military rifles of Imperial Germany.
This example was produced in 1875 and bears the correct “ÖSTERR. WAFFENFABR. GES.” Steyr manufacturer’s roll mark. It retains crisp Imperial FW (King Wilhelm I) acceptance stamps together with numerous original Prussian inspection marks throughout the rifle.
The rifle measures approximately 1,240 mm (48.8 in) in overall length with a 747 mm (29.4 in) barrel, conforming to original military specifications.
A major highlight of this rifle is its exceptional originality. Virtually every serialized component—including the receiver, bolt body, bolt head, cocking piece, firing pin, extractor, and other bolt components—remains fully matching with the serial number 7612G. Even the smallest bolt components retain their original matching assembly numbers, an extremely uncommon level of originality after approximately 150 years.
The rifle also retains its original cleaning rod, complete with a crisp Prussian military inspection mark, further enhancing its originality and collector appeal.
Mechanically, the rifle functions properly. The bore is exceptionally bright with sharp, well-defined rifling, exhibiting outstanding preservation that is seldom encountered on black-powder military rifles of this period.
Finding a Prussian Model 1871 Jägerbüchse is uncommon in itself; locating one that remains fully matching throughout, retains its original cleaning rod, exhibits strong Imperial acceptance markings, and possesses an excellent bore is exceptionally difficult. This rifle represents a superb opportunity for the advanced collector of Imperial German or early Mauser military arms.
