Offered here is an Imperial German Seitengewehr 98 (S98) long bayonet dated 1906, designed for use with the German Gewehr 98 (G98) Mauser rifle.
The blade spine retains the Imperial German crown and "06" date marking, indicating 1906 production, eight years before the outbreak of World War I. The blade ricasso also bears a manufacturer marking from Suhl, Germany, a historic center of German arms manufacturing.
The S98 is a classic early Imperial German military bayonet, distinguished by its exceptionally long blade, distinctive hooked crossguard, and grooved wooden grips.
This example features an approximately 52 cm (20.5-inch) blade, with a well-defined fuller, and comes with a period-style black leather scabbard with metal fittings.
Condition
Blade: In very good condition, retaining a bright, shiny metal finish with only minor signs of age and use.
Wooden Grips: Both grips remain intact, with clearly defined grooves and natural wear consistent with age.
Metal Fittings: The crossguard and pommel are intact, showing natural oxidation and age-related patina.
Leather Scabbard: Shows significant age-related wear, including deterioration of the leather, localized damage, and worn stitching. The bayonet cannot be fully inserted into the scabbard, leaving an approximately 1 cm gap between the crossguard and the scabbard opening.
A fine example of an early Imperial German S98 long bayonet, featuring a clearly dated 1906 marking and a well-preserved, bright blade.
