This Armalite AR-7 Explorer is an early Costa Mesa–produced example from the classic first-generation production era. Manufactured approximately between 1959 and 1973, this period represents the original and most desirable phase of AR-7 production, before manufacturing rights changed hands several times. Early Costa Mesa rifles are recognized for their higher build quality, distinct markings, and collectible status.
The AR-7 was originally developed as a lightweight, takedown survival rifle for U.S. Air Force aircrew, designed so that the barrel, receiver, and magazine could be fully stored inside the hollow polymer stock. The rifle retains the original black-and-brown marbled stock characteristic of early production, with the buttplate clearly marked “AR-7 / Armalite / Costa Mesa, Calif.” The stock shows expected surface scratches but remains structurally intact, and the internal storage compartment functions properly.
International fame for the AR-7 grew significantly after its appearance in the James Bond film From Russia With Love (1963), where a customized survival rifle based on the AR-7 platform was prominently featured. Its connection to the 007 franchise helped cement the AR-7 as one of the most iconic survival rifles of the 20th century and greatly increased its appeal among collectors.
Metal components on this rifle are clean with light handling wear. Receiver markings are sharp, the action cycles properly, the detachable magazine locks in securely, and the barrel tightens firmly via the correct threaded collar system. The rifle retains the correct early-pattern barrel profile, rear sight configuration, and period-appropriate finish.
Overall, this is a well-preserved example of the classic early-production Armalite AR-7—lightweight, historically significant, and strongly sought after by collectors of American survival firearms and 007 memorabilia.
