The barrel number corresponds with the receiver and is accompanied by numerous original \u003cstrong\u003eBritish military proof, acceptance, and inspection markings\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe original serial marking on the \u003cstrong\u003efore-end\u003c\/strong\u003e has become extremely faint from long-term wear. However, remnants resembling \u003cstrong\u003e“L6??5”\u003c\/strong\u003e can still be distinguished in the proper location. The surviving characters, format, and placement are consistent with the rifle's serial number, and the fore-end can \u003cstrong\u003ereasonably be considered matching based on the remaining visible evidence\u003c\/strong\u003e. Other inspected components do not show conflicting serial numbers and instead carry various military acceptance and inspection markings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eImportantly, the rifle retains its \u003cstrong\u003emagazine cut-off\u003c\/strong\u003e, one of the characteristic features of the original No.1 Mk III configuration. The cut-off allowed the magazine to be held in reserve while the rifle was loaded and fired one round at a time. This feature was eliminated as part of the simplified \u003cstrong\u003eMk III*\u003c\/strong\u003e configuration introduced during wartime production, making its presence particularly desirable on a WWI-era SMLE.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNumerous additional \u003cstrong\u003eBritish military proof, acceptance, and inspection stamps\u003c\/strong\u003e remain visible throughout the rifle, providing further evidence of its military manufacture and service history.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe metal surfaces display \u003cstrong\u003ehonest age and service wear\u003c\/strong\u003e, with finish loss, edge wear, exposed metal, and naturally developed patina appropriate to a military rifle of this age. The wood likewise shows extensive period handling and service marks, including scratches, dents, and general surface wear consistent with its long history.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor a \u003cstrong\u003e1917-production SMLE\u003c\/strong\u003e, the bore remains in quite good condition. It is \u003cstrong\u003erelatively bright with clearly visible rifling\u003c\/strong\u003e.
